Painting Seascapes

Today we painted seascapes. With the Volvo Ocean Race in Galway, we have been learning about sailing and how the crew have been surviving travelling over the seas of the world.

We painted the ocean a darker blue than the sky.

Our paintings helped us to imagine what difficulties the crew went through.

We used potatoes to print the sails of the boats in different sizes. We used quarter segments of potatoes and then printed with the colour we wanted our sails to be.

We blended the colours together carefully.

Some of us made sailing pictures using lollipop sticks and added sails using different coloured paper.

We also used the oil pastels to shade in the seascape.

We used these potatoes to print our sailing boats onto our seascape.

A job well done and a very busy afternoon!

My Soccer Medals.

I got my first soccer medal at my first time at the Athenry soccer club. When I first joined the club I was a bit shy. But I got over it. I got a medal for player of the year. The was my first medal.

I got my second soccer medal at a big final In Oranmore against Oranmore . We lost 1-0. But in the league we came 2nd place .That was how I got my second soccer medal.

I got my third soccer medal at a soccer blitz down in the Athenry pitch. We were playing against each other and I scored the most goals in the matches.

At home I have 2 other medals. One was for another blitz for skills and the other was for good passing.

Super Soccer Stars!

On Sunday the 24th of May there was an awards night for Athenry soccer club. There was a blitz the day before. I won u10 player of the year. This is my second time to win it. I was so proud of myself.

Last Sunday I won a medal for Athenry. We played and I was in goal and I only let in one goal!

A few weeks ago in May, in the SMA House, Claregalway, there was a play, and this play was called 'Once on this Island'. The star part was Ti Moune.

She was found in a tree and was raised by some very poor villagers . These villagers were called Mama Jurey and Tomb Tomb Jurey. As Ti Moune grew up she learned that she would never learn how to drive. Then one day Ti Moune found that a rich boy had crashed his car. Ti Moune instantly wanted to help, so then Mama and Tomb Tomb ran up and said “Don’t touch him”.

Ti Moune didn’t listen, she cared for him and then Tomb Tomb came and took the boy away ,his name is Daniel. Ti Moune found him and broke away from him as well.So in the end she didn’t live her life as she wanted it to be and that’s mainly the story of Ti Moune.

I was dancing in the show. It was lots of fun.

Gardening Club

Today was a lovely sunny day. We started work in the garden again. The garden is in front of the school. 4th class have the job of looking after the garden every year. We usually do it on Wednesday afternoons. Today it was group 1's turn to do the garden.

Our ‘Taste Sense’ Experiment

Taste is one of our five senses. We taste with our tongues. Some things taste sweet, some things taste salty and some things taste bitter.

Today we made an experiment to test if we could tell the difference between different things. We had to cover our eyes with our jumpers. We also need to close our nose. We were not able to use our sense of sight or our sense of smell.

We worked in pairs. While one person was blindfolded the other person got a sample of something to taste and put it on the cotton bud. Then the cotton bud was put on to the other persons tongue!

The lemon and vinegar were very bitter tastes. The honey was sweet tasting and the salt was very salty.

It was important to use clean cotton buds every time we tried a new taste. This was a fun experiment today.

Here are a few questions we asked:

1. How well did your sense of smell kick in when your sense of sight and sense of smell were not in use?
2. Were you a bid afraid of what might be placed on your tongue?
3. Were any of the tastes better or worse with your eyes closed ?
4. What happened when you pinched your nose for the taste test? Did you loose your sense of taste?
5. Did you notice that your tongue sensed sweet, salty, bitter and sour foods on different parts of your tongue? We have taste buds on our tongues. Some parts of the tongue pick up tastes better than others.

Our Incredible Edibles

This is our potato plant out in the garden. We will leave it outside now and hope it grows healthier.

The strawberry plant is still inside on the window.

The cabbage is not looking so healthy
The scallions are doing well this week!
The lettuce is growing well too.

Make a Wrap Day!

Using as many healthy ingredients we made our own healthy wraps today. Everyone brought in different fillings for the wraps and we enjoyed making up our own.

We used lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, scallions, peppers, sweetcorn, kidney beans, celery, all different types of cheeses as well as chicken, turkey and ham! Miss Lardner allowed us to heat the chicken in the microwave. The cheese melted on the chicken.

We used lots of different sauces. Cathal brought in the tabasco sauce. This was the hottest. We also tried sweet chilli sauce, salsa, mayonaise and ketchup.
