Our Visit to the Aquarium

We got to hold a turanchula shell. About once a year the turanchala loses it's shell and then it grows a new one. Graham held it but I didn't hold it.

On the 26th of May 2008 we went to the aquarium. We saw two sea horses that are mates. They will never let go of their tales. One day they might get babies.

There was a big crab in the fish tank. Brian, our tour guide, took the crab out of the tank and we were allowed to hold it. It felt very rough. It was very heavy.

This was my favourite part of the trip because we got to make our own fish of the future and gave them names. I called mine Sharkahogapien this was a cross between a shark, a hedgehog and a scorpian!

By Ian M

We were making boats to see whose boat could hold the most passengers without sinking in the water. My boat held about 16 passengers. Stephen's boat held the most coins -these represented passengers. It held 27 coins (passengers). The bucket of water was the sea!

Here is a picture of us in the classroom making boats out of marla to see how many passengers it would carry.

Shane wins at Cregmore

Last bank holiday Monday, I went to a soccer blitz. It was in Cregmore. We played 5 games including the final against Colga. The final score was 3-1. I was playing left mid-field. It was very hot. I got sunburnt but I got a trophy. Ian O' Shea was also there. He got to the semi-final on his team.

Our School Tour to Dublin

Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth class went to Dublin on the First of May. We went on the half seven train. When we arrived at Dublin we got a bus to the National Library. A girl called Sarah showed us around the library. Sarah was talking to us about W .B .Yeats. Five minutes before we had to leave the Library we got to go to a little souvenir shop.

Then we walked to the National History Museum. A girl called
Melissa showed us the Templemoyle Bell. Then later we saw the longest boat in Europe and it was also the oldest in Europe. The boat was so long they had to cut a hole in the wall to get it into the museum. The boat could hold twelve people at a time.

After that we went on the bus and went to Croke Park. We had our lunch in Croke Park. Then we went to a room and we saw a final of Hurling and Football from 1997. Then we went to dressing room number two and this is known as the lucky dressing room. Cian, our guide, told us a story about when it was first used. Armagh were using this dressing room. At half time they were losing against Kerry. Joe Curran was Armagh’s manager. He showed them a runner’s up medal and said “If this is all you want then keep playing as you are playing now.” Then he showed them a winner’s medal and said “If this is what you want you have to play the game of your life!” In the end they won and Armagh won their first title.

Then we went to the warm-up room. It had a net to protect the lights. Then we went through the tunnel and we could hear a crowd screaming and drums. We went to the top of the stadium. It was a great view! There were sprinklers in the pitch. After we went to a small museum and it was all about Croke Park and GAA. A long time ago girls had to wear dresses when they were playing any sports. When we were at the small museum we could practice our sports. After we left the museum we had to go back to the bus.

When we got to the train station we were ten minutes early and some people went to Super Macs. When every one was ready we went to the train. When every one was sitting down the train was starting to move. We arrived home at 7pm. We were all really tired after the long day. We all had great fun on the tour.

OUR TRIP TO DUBLIN

On the first of May, third, forth, fifth and sixth class went to Dublin. We all went to Athenry station and we left the station at 7.30 am. The teachers of third forth fifth and sixth class, Mrs Magnier and Karen guided us on the train and around Dublin. We had a carriage to ourselves and had fun. It was a long journey there and we arrived there at 9.30 am. We got the bus from the station it was a big bus. On the way we saw the Spire and big buildings and also the River Liffey.

When we arrived at the library we met a girl named Sarah who showed us around the Yeats exhibition. Sarah told us a lot about W.B. Yeats and she showed us pictures of his brothers and sisters and his parents. Did you know he was not good at spellings or writing in school! We saw his report card and trophy for being the fastest runner in school. We also saw many of his belongings like his top hat and glasses and even his blotter. Sarah told us that Yeats said that when he was dying in France that he would like to be brought back to Sligo two months later but he could not go back till world war two was over.

When we came out of the library we went to the History Museum and saw the Templemoyle Bell that Gerry Rabbitte found when he was younger and lots of other things. We also got to touch the bell but we had to wear gloves we also got to touch lots of other stuff like swords and things found in bogs too. We then met a girl called Melissa and she showed us around the museum.

After that we went to Croke Park sand had our lunch. A man called Cian showed us around. He said that there are 2000 doors around the stadium. Then we went to dressing room 2 [Lucky Dressing Room]. Then we went to the warm up room. Cian said that the goal keeper asked to paint the room white so it would be harder to see the sliotar and help him to concentrate. Gerry Rabbitte banged on the window and it was not glass it was perspex. Then we went through the tunnel it looked big on TV but it was small when we went through it. This is because it can be stretched on a matched day to make it longer.

Next we got the bus to the station. We got there early and got to go to the shops. Some went to Supermacs. Then the train arrived and every one got on. This time we did not have a carriage to ourselves as it was very busy. Soon we got back to the Athenry station and all the parents were there waiting.

Interviewing Past Pupils

Robert Shanahan interviewed his grandmother Judy Feeney. He asked her lots of questions about when she went to school at Newcastle.

Last week I interviewed my grandmother. She told me there was a platform where the pitch is now. She also told me there was a teacher called Mrs. Murphy- this was actually a different Mrs Murphy to our principal today. The school was heated by an open fire in the classroom!

By Robert (4th Class)

Eoin Burke interviewed his uncle John O' Donnell. He found out lots about when his uncle was a pupil here at Newcastle.

Last week I interviewed my uncle he told me about when he was younger. They did not have any sports day. They had a small field that they could play on they would play hurling and soccer. He said it was touph growing up. The teachers were nice and his best friend was Kevin O' Donnell- his second cousin.
